The Heritage Museum was established in 1976 as a bicentennial project. In a joint effort, it was a “labor of love” for many groups and individuals. It is housed in the old Mobile and Ohio railroad depot which was relocated to provide space for the museum.  The original flooring and outside walls of the museum were retained. The interior of the museum was modernized.  In the early 1980s, an additional room was added.  In 2008 the museum was completely renovated with new paint, carpet, display cases and newly designed exhibits.

On December 7, 2008 a grand reopening was held.  Over 300 visitors came that day.  Partial funding for the museum comes from the City of Starkville and from the Oktibbeha County Supervisors.  Funding is augmented by donations and grants.

The mission of the Heritage Museum is to collect artifacts pertaining to the history of Oktibbeha County.  Displays include photographs, native Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum photo by J. Visitors to the museum are welcome.  Admission is free.  The museum is open from 1:00 to 4:00 Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Group tours can be arranged at other times by calling Marion Honsinger at 324-1386 or by calling the museum at 323-0211.  The museum is located at 206 Fellowship Street in Starkville at the corner of Russell and Fellowship Streets across from Odd Fellows Cemetery.  For more information, contact Joan Wilson at 323-5220 or Marion Honsinger.
